5 of the best Sunday Roasts

The Weald of Kent and Sussex is packed to the beamed rafters with beautiful old pubs and we’re lucky that many of them boast incredible food as well. We’ve gathered together our favourite local pubs for when you’re craving an open fire, Bloody Mary, pint and a nourishing roast dinner.

THE HURSTWOOD

High Hurstwood

With a beautiful interior, complete with thick curtains and a roaring open fire, The Hurstwood is the perfect cosy spot to while away a wet windy Sunday afternoon. Run by a husband and wife team, the staff are friendly and the food is elevated and a step above a lot of other roasts in the area. On those sunnier days (when they finally arrive!) dine outside under a huge stretch tent and enjoy a glass of wine looking on to the pub’s garden and raised vegetable beds.

Three Chimneys

Biddenden

Low beamed ceilings? Hops around the bar? Cosy corners and inglenook fires? Check, check, check! If you looked up ‘charming Wealden pub’ in the dictionary, then you would find a picture of the 3 chimneys in Biddenden. Escape the rain, the cold and the hum drum and ensconce yourself a nook with a bottle of red and tuck into a roast made with locally sourced meat and veg.

THE POET

Matfield

The Poet in Matfield is a pub, but really it’s so much more than that. From the moment you set foot in the door, the service and quality is impeccable. Expect a roast elevated to a fine dining level, with stunning presentation to match. The perfect spot for a special occasion, or if you just fancy treating yourself!

THE CHEQUERS

Lamberhurst

Friendly, cosy, with plenty of room for the whole family, The Chequers in the centre of Lamberhurst is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. Stylish interiors combine traditional features with contemporary, playful colours and styles. Expect a roast with all the trimmings that really fills the plate, the belly and the heart, and a warm welcome.

THE WHITE HART

Wadhurst

Another well-loved pub in the heart of the village, The White Hart prides itself on its extensive English Wine List and locally sourced produce, with meat, vegetables, cheese and fish all coming from independent local producers. Sunday Roasts are a firm favourite, especially the beef, which is dry-aged onsite and owner Sam is perfectly placed to recommend the perfect bottle of wine to accompany the meat.
